Overview –
This was originally an Opalescent Dark Green 1963 Series 1 roadster – and was an E-Type with all of the desirable Series 1 features – Triple SU carbs, covered headlamps, early 3.8-liter bucket seats, toggle switches, etc. The build date was sometime during the first week of August, 1963.
We have a clear US title for this project, and a signed bill of sale will also be provided. The original data plate is intact, as is the original front chassis member with the matching chassis number stamped into it – which is 8798XX. For privacy, I have hidden the last 2 digits of the chassis number in all photos – this car is not yet logged into the www.xkedata.com E-Type registry, and I believe that it should be the new owner’s choice as to whether or when to do so…
This project has been tucked away in the back of our shop for a while, and although we have had lots of different ideas for this one, we are just drowning in restoration work and need the space. So it is time for this one to find a new home and become something great!
This is an incomplete, PARTIAL project for total restoration that is being sold in AS-IS condition. Again – what you see is what you get, but the key components needed to build an E-Type based project are present and in good restorable condition. The components that are missing are the ancillary trim pieces, etc. that would not be used for a high-performance or racing E-Type project (although all missing components are readily available from multiple suppliers), or are common replacement items (wiring harnesses, exhaust system, hoses and belts, etc…)
Engine –
The engine is an original, correct and unmolested unit from a 1963 E-Type. It is complete from the flywheel to the front pulleys, and from the carb trumpets to the oil pan. It appears to have never been apart, and all of the original nuts, bolts, linkage pieces, etc. are all intact. It is a very good, original and rebuildable unit.
Gearbox –
The gearbox is an original, correct E-Type 3.8-liter Moss box. It is complete with all gears, mainsheet, input shaft, etc. It is the correct gearbox for a 3.8-liter E-Type, although you may want to replace it with a later all-synchro box or a 5-speed.
Suspension –
The front suspension is all E-Type, with the later uprights that accept the larger brake calipers with larger brake pads. The rear suspension is also E-Type, and also has the later, larger calipers with larger brake pads, as well as the later, stronger aluminum uprights.
Body Options –
This project lends itself to complete replacement of the body shell with either a new steel or aluminum unit. We work with a supplier of aluminum body shells and can help you source a variety of different shells for this project – Low-Drag Coupe, Lightweight Roadster, or even a D-Type replica shell in all aluminum that is designed to accept E-Type suspension and running gear.
Of course, we could also build a new steel shell for this project here, but our current backlog means that we are not able to sign up for that on this project. A complete new steel shell can also be sourced from a couple of different suppliers in the UK.
Finally, in the hands of a skilled and dedicated restorer, the forward bulkhead and main bonnet panels could be restored and used as the basis to build up a body shell from panels. What I CAN do for you is offer a 25% discount on any and all body panels purchased through Monocoque Metalworks for the restoration of this project. This is a MUCH deeper discount on panels than we offer even to restoration shops, and we can pack and ship the panels along with the project if you like to avoid shipping costs and customs or import duty on the panels themselves.
Component Options –
Monocoque Metalworks owns several E-Type project cars (too many…), and we also have a large collection of original E-Type parts and pieces. Therefore, if desired, we can adjust or “tailor” the components included with this project to suit your needs. For example, if you would rather have a later full-synchro gearbox, or would rather have the earlier uprights and brakes, we can work with you on that.
Location & Shipping –
This E-Type is owned by Monocoque Metalworks and is located at our shop in Maryland, USA.
Shipping is to be arranged by and paid for by the purchaser – but we can help you with that process. We have sold many E-Types over the years, and are familiar with the process of shipping them overseas. We can help you find a shipper – and safe transport to the docks in Elizabeth, NJ is available in an insured, enclosed trailer by me personally for an additional fee. We have worked with Schumacher Logistics in the past (as well as several others…) to ship cars to the UK, Europe, and Australia with good results, and I am sure that they can work out the transportation for you if you are an overseas buyer.
Conclusion –
If you’re going to build an E-Type racer, low-drag, or lightweight, the first thing you need is a donor car with a good, strong identity and paperwork – and good restorable driveline components – and that’s ALL here! Don’t spend twice as much on a more complete E-Type project just so you can discard half of it to get down to the key components offered here!
Stop dreaming and get to work – grab this package, start the restoration process on the running gear, and start LIVING your E-Type dream! But if you are interested, DON’T WAIT – as I’ve said many times, they go FAST!
