I received an email this morning that prompted me to throw up a quick blog because it’s just so cool!
These photos are of an E-type vintage racer owned by William Gely in France. He and I have communicated a couple of times about various parts, etc., and he sent me these photos of his racer this morning on his way out the door to the Monza Historic festival.
I LOVE this car! William’s E-type is prepped in “pre-1963” racing trim, with very period racing upgrades and even retaining the SU carbs. I also LOVE the color – VERY period! In my opinion, if you are building a non-stock E-Type and want more of a “racing” look, THIS is what it should look like. I see too many E-Types that I believe are “over-done”…
Here is some text that he sent with a link that you can check out. Enjoy – and good luck this weekend, William!
Dear friends:
A late start for in your socks this season, but it was well worth the wait: We kick-off with a beautiful event on a magnificent racetrack, Monza Historic, which will take place on 10-12 July. Then we will go on to Spain, having been fortunate enough to have been accepted at the 50th anniversary of the Jarama racetrack, in the Iberian Historic Endurance series. Finally our season will end with the Dix Mille Tours at the Circuit Paul Ricard where we hope that Gérard and Claude will take the start in their semi-lightweight. Three legendary racetracks and a lot of fun to be had.
So we start with Monza and a very fast track on which we can hope that the weight of our fixed-head will not be as much of a handicap as it is on other tracks. However, taking into consideration the opposition which showed up at the Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or, the challenge will be holding our own among the other E-types present. Indeed, in very full grid of 112 entries, no fewer than 15 E-types are registered. Among these only one other car shares our pre-63 specifications and SU carburrettors, so it will be our benchmark. Bear in mind that this year E-types have become increasingly competitive, J-P Lajournade having finished second at the Age d’Or in his new car!
Taking place on a racetrack carved in 2000 acres of park land in the beautiful city of Monza and with an excellent gathering of historic racecars, this first edition promises to be quite remarkable. For further information, this is the official website:
Finally, we would like to welcome Carta-Rouxel who, following their technical assistance in the preperation of the fixed -head for Le Mans Classic 2014, has decided to join alongside our partner Synéthique and support us this year.
If you are unable to join us at Monza on 10-12 July, you can follow us on Facebook. See the “in your socks” page.
Happy trails, William Gély

- What a GREAT looking E-Type racer! I love their very tame, period approach. Here, the chrome bumpers have been removed, leaving the factory flange behind the rear bumpers, which is exactly how ALL early E-Types were actually raced – no “smoothing” of this seam, and no massive rear wing flares, etc. The bonnet latch and straps are also period methods of securing the bonnet, and the color is typical as well – VERY well done, Gilliam!
- This photo and the one above were taken at Spa. What a shot! The skid marks of a previous competitor coming off the racing line are a nice touch too!
- Coming into the pits – aside from the crispness of the photo and cleanliness of the track, this could have been taken in 1962!
- Another shot from Spa – at speed…
- I poked around on the website links William sent, and foiund this poster for this weekend’s historic races at Monza – Excellent!
- More poking around revealed this map of the weekend’s course, although you can see the large banked oval as well. This really got my juices flowing – and thinking about the big race at Monza in the finale of Grand Prix (greatest movie of all time…)
- And finding this photo on the site was REALLY cool – in the movie, they show some of the characters wandering around at Monza before the race, and focus in on a large-scale slot car track JUST like this – I wonder if it is the same one after all this time?…
- Here is a shot of Jean-Pierre running flat-out on the Monza banking in the final race of the movie – desperately trying to catch up after stalling on the starting grid…
- And I found this photo as well while searching for a good photo of the movie showing the Monza track. These are two of the main characters, battling it out at Monza! This image is incredible – if you click on it to enlarge it, and stare at it for a couple seconds, it looks like the cars are moving! Brent will be here to start the work day in a few minutes, and I can already see his eyes rolling when I tell him that today’s selection in the shop is Grand Prix – again…
- Good Luck William! Hopefully your weekend will go alot like this – just out in front of the other E-Types!
